Conditions of Rental
All vehicles are rented subject to Europcar Terms and Conditions of the Rental
Agreement which must be signed by all renters. This site is for information purposes only.
Europcar reserves the right to offer more than one vehicle model within each vehicle category.
Europcar cannot guarantee a specific vehicle brand however will accommodate any requests based on availability.
Rates
Rates are quoted in South African Rands (ZAR). Rates, conditions and information are
subject to change without notice. Rates include maintenance, oil and VAT, but exclude fuel.
Minimum Rental Charge
The minimum rental period is 24 hours. Rentals are charged in periods of 24 hours
from the date and time of checkout. A 24 hour (one day) minimum charge applies.
Availability
Certain groups and/or models may not be available at a particular branch. Models
are subject to availability.
Long Rentals
Should the rental exceed 31 days, an additional rental agreement will apply for each period
of 31 days. Additional vouchers will be required accordingly.
Extension of Rental
Extension of rentals beyond the original date must be authorised by Europcar.
If an extension is required, please contact SouthAfriCar during office
hours (weekdays from 08:30 - 16:30) by telephone or email in order to qualify for these
discounted rates. If the extension is made directly with Europcar, then the
more expensive Europcar extension rates will be charged.
Failure to comply with this procedure will result in renter driving the vehicle
without Collision Damage Waiver and/or Theft Protection and without lawful permission.
Cancellation of Rental
A cancellation fee of 10% will be levied for all reservations that are cancelled after
the reservation confirmation has been issued by SouthAfriCAR. A further "No Show Fee"
equivalent to one day's rental at the Europcar extension rates will apply, if the
SouthAfriCAR reservation team is not notified of your cancellation prior to pickup.
Age/Drivers Licence
The minimum age for drivers is 23. Please refer to Young Driver details for renters
under the age of 23. There is no maximum age. Drivers must be in possession of a
valid unendorsed licence. Whilst driving clients are required to have their
driver's licence in their possession at all times. A International drivers
license is required for non-South African citizens (foreigners).
Young Driver
A renter who is under the age of 23, but has been in the possession of a valid unendorsed
driver's licence for at least 2 years will be approved to hire the vehicle.
A R135 (R155 as of 1/11/2009) charge per driver, per day will apply.
Forms of Payment
Rentals will only be granted to holders of a major
credit card i.e. American Express, Diners Club, Visa, and MasterCard. For
rentals, authorisation will be obtained. No debit cards including Mastro and
Electron are accepted.
Classic Insurance Cover
Acceptance of this cover is compulsory for every vehicle rented out by Europcar
Car Rental. Insurance cover limits the renter's liability in the event of
collision or theft of the vehicle.
Classic Plus Insurance Cover
This cover provides the renter with added insurance cover, which includes a R1000 excess for foreigners,
and an excess of R1800 - R5500 (R6600 - R10500 as of 1/11/2009) for local drivers depending on which vehicle group is chosen, in the event of
collision or theft of the vehicle.
Exclusions
The renter will be liable for the full value of the damage and/or loss where
such damage or loss is sustained in circumstances including but not
limited to the following:
- As a result of gross or criminal negligence
- Where the vehicle is driven by an unauthorised driver i.e. a
driver not specified as a driver or additional driver on the Rental Agreement.
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances.
- Failure to obtain authorization from Europcar to extend the pre-booked rental.
- Failure to report damage or theft to Europcar and the South African police services immediately and within the stipulated time limited
- Where the vehicle has been taken beyond the borders of South Africa without
the written permission of Europcar.
- Not being able to produce the keys in case of theft unless exceptional
circumstances apply.
- Not reporting the exact details of the last known location of the vehicle
prior to the theft.
- Collisions where no other vehicle, person, animal or object is involved,
unless exception circumstances apply
- Where there has been a material breach of the Terms and Conditions of the
Rental Agreement.
- Not adhering to traffic, road and driving rules and regulations
- On gravel / unsurfaced road the speed limit of 50 kph must not be exceeded.
- Not driving on the left hand side of the road.
- Unsuitable driving or road conditions
- Towing or repairs to the vehicle without authorisation
- Failure to report damages to Europcar immediately
- Failure to return keys to a authorised Europcar representative
Acceptance of Insurance does not cover the renter for damage to or loss of tyres,
rims and hubcaps, for damage to windscreens, for water and under-carriage damage
or for towing charges.
Personal Belongings
Personal Belongings are not covered by the insurance provided.
Personal Accident Insurance
This insurance covers the renter and passengers of the rental vehicle up to a
maximum of R25 000 per incident, in the event of death or permanent disability
resulting from a collision with another vehicle.
Over Border Rentals
Written permission from Europcar is required before taking a vehicle beyond
the borders of South Africa. An "over border" fee will be charged by Europcar for
excursions into Mozambique, and by the Namibian government (charged at the border)
for trips into Namibia. A drop-off charge is levied for rentals terminating
outside South Africa.
- Vehicles are allowed into Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Zambia
- Vehicles are not allowed into Angola and Zimbabwe
The following exceptions apply:
- From Namibia vehicles are allowed into to Botswana, South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique and Zambia. Vehicles are not allowed into Angola and Zimbabwe
- South Africa to Mozambique and Zambia - only car groups allowed are: J, A, T, B, C, D and F
- International passport holders (not African) are permitted to cross with groups W,V, S and E (African passport holders must have Directors
approval for all rentals crossing these borders (all vehicle groups)).
Additional over border fees
- A non refundable fee will be levied for vehicles crossing the border
- Botswana: R500 (R550 as of 1/11/2009)
- Swaziland: R500 (R550 as of 1/11/2009)
- Lesotho: R500 (R550 as of 1/11/2009)
- Namibia: R500 (R550 as of 1/11/2009)
- Mozambique and Zambia: R1250 (R1300 as of 1/11/2009)
- All foreign registered vehicles entering Namibia will have to pay a Cross
Border Charge. A Cross Border Certificate will be issued by the Namibian
authorities and must be kept in the glove compartment or handed to the
Europcar representative.
- A penalty fee of up to R5000 may be levied if the documentation is not produced/found.
- An additional excess of R7500 applies on all rentals where the accident occured in Mozambique or Zambia. For damage or loss which occurs in Botswana, Lesotho,
Swaziland and Namibia, the local brochure excess of that country will apply
One Way Rentals
Domestic
For rentals terminating at a location that is a distance of 150kms or more away
from the original renting branch, a R600 (R750 as of 1/11/2009) one-way fee applies.
International
For rentals terminating outside South Africans borders a one way fee applies:
- South Africa to Swaziland: R600 (R800 as of 1/11/2009)
- South Africa to Lesotho: R600 (R5000 as of 1/11/2009)
- South Africa to Botswana: R800 (R1000 as of 1/11/2009)
- South Africa to Namibia: R4000 (R5000 as of 1/11/2009)
- Namibia to South Africa: R4000 (R5000 as of 1/11/2009)
- Namibia to Botswana: R4000 (R5000 as of 1/11/2009)
Delivery & Collection
A delivery and/or collection fee may be levied. In addition any toll fees or
game park entrance fees will be billed.
Office Hours
- 25 Kilometres or less, R200 (R235 as of 1/11/2009)
- 26 Kilometres or more, R7 (R9 as of 1/11/2009) per km
After hours, weekends and public holidays
- 25 Kilometres or less, R380 (R400 as of 1/11/2009)
- 26 Kilometres or more, R7 (R9 as of 1/11/2009) per km
The renter shall be liable for all fuel used to deliver and collect a vehicle.
Toll Fees or Game Park Entrance Fees will be billed in addition to the delivery or collection charge.
Contract Fee
A contract fee of R40 (R45 as of 1/11/2009) per rental will be charged
directly to the client at point of rental.
No Show Fee
A no show fee of 1 days rental will apply.
Additional charges / Handling fees
All fines and penalties incurred during the rental period are for the renter's
own account. In addition a R550 handling fee will be levied on traffic penalties
incurred. Loss of keys will result in an applicable charge being levied.
A valet charge of R550 may be levied on dirty vehicles. If there is loss of
or damage to the vehicle, a claim handling fee of R550 will be charged on
termination of the rental.
In case of a traffic fine, a Traffic fine handling fee of R180 (R220 as of 1/11/2009) will be levied.
Deposits - Excess and Fuel
A deposit for fuel of R1000 is required on initiation of the rental. A further R6600 to R10500 deposit is required
when Classic Insurance cover is taken.
Additional Driver Surcharges
- Additional drivers are charged at R175 (R220 as of 1/11/2009) per rental per driver.
Additional Equipment
- Child seats are charges at R200 (R450 as of 1/11/2009)per rental per seat, for children of
age 0-5 years.
- Second Spare Wheels at R650 (R750 as of 1/11/2009) per rental per wheel.
Frequent Flyer
Clients do not qualify for Frequent Flyer miles.
Fuel
Each Europcar vehicle leaves with a full tank and the renter pays for refuelling
on return. Each vehicle is refuelled on termination regardless of whether or not the fuel
gauge indicates that the vehicle is full.
Rental Requirements
The client would be required to supply the following:
- Reservation number
- Credit card
- Name, address, telephone number and email address
- Local contact details
- A valid drivers license and passport. (International drivers license required for non-South African citizens).
- Email address
Payment procedures
Payment of the Basic Rental Charge is required in advance. This will be taken by
SouthAfriCar by credit card 15 days before pick up date. For pick-ups and drop-offs around the Fifa World Cup
(11 June - 11 July 2010), the credit card will be charged 30 days prior to pick-up or for late bookings,
immediately after Invoicing. At the counter on pick up, Europcar will separately charge either
R1000 for Classic Plus Insurance or R2000 (R6600 to R10500 as of 1/11/2009) for Classic Insurance on the
credit card for the fuel deposit, insurance excess (if applicable), contract fee and any optional extras
which are required. On termination of the rental any relevant items will be deducted and
the balance of the charge will then be refunded. Should there be any damage to the car
during the rental period, Europcar reserves the right to charge a claim handling fee of R550.
Driving Requirements
What to do in case of a breakdown
- Contact Europcar on the emergency toll free number 0800 011 344 (South Africa only)
- Emergency SOS telephones are conveniently located on most major highways (South Africa only)
- Client is not to replace or repair any vehicle parts unless authorised by Europcar in writing
What to do in the event of an accident/theft
- Contact Europcar immediately
- A full report must be made to the nearest Police Station within 24 hours where an
accident has occurred and 6 hours in case of theft.
- A case number must be obtained
Useful Information
Government Tax
- Tax is included in the rates but may be subject to change in accordance with
Government Legislation in which case rates will be adjusted accordingly
